Abstract
Abstract: Huchard, Erb and Erlenmeyer (cited in [736]) reported favorable clinical experiences in the treatment of moderate cardiac insufficiency with dyspnea, cardiac asthma, light to moderate angina pectoris, and intermittent claudication with the application of potassium iodide. Gangrenous skin ulcers could, however, not be influenced by the application of potassium iodide. The question of whether the mechanism of action could primarily be seen in the dilation of vessels as Huchard et al. postulated, or rather in the reduction of the blood viscosity was first tested by Müller and Inada of the Romberg group (see below). This publication on the improvement in the flow properties of blood through potassium iodide was a stimulus for several successive investigators to publish studies of their own on the effect of potassium compounds on hemorheologic parameters and represents the first attempt at drug-induced therapeutic hemorheology. Potassium iodide is still being applied from time to time in diseases such as arteriosclerosis and senile emphysema.
